Say Less, Smell More: The Virtue's Ocean-Inspired Fragrance for Superyachts

Brooke Lean has a rule for her company: keep the words few. "We've made The Virtue's philosophy 'say less, smell more'," she says. "Be human—smell divine."

Her company, The Virtue, is a boutique perfumery from New Zealand focused on deeper feeling—and a fragrance that gives back to the sea.

The belief is simple: perfume is most powerful when the brand quietens down. "The more you talk about perfume or art, the more contrived and embarrassing it gets to me," she says.

Understanding Luxury Consumers

Lean understands that luxury consumers don't need to be told what to feel. "I want to bet on people's intelligence," she says. "The smell and the imagery is what needs to do the talking."

She is so committed to this philosophy that she envisions The Virtue as a "totally silent brand" one day. "No explanation," she adds. "They can get into it however they want to."

It is a quiet stance that aligns neatly with where modern luxury is shifting: confident, unhurried, and human-first.

From Imagery to Olfaction

Lean began her career as a photographer, shooting interiors and editorial features. But scent was always close. "Everywhere I went, I'd be assaulted by smells," she says. "I've always had a really heightened sense of smell."

In 2016, a trip to Cuba changed everything. Heat, music, texture—an environment too vivid to stay two-dimensional. She put on an exhibition of photographs but decided to create scent to accompany them. The response was immediate. "People were getting the soy wax from my candles and putting it on themselves," she says. "I realised it's not candles… it's actual perfume."

Perfume was more intimate. More direct. More human.

A Global Brand Built Quietly

The Virtue is a lean operation: "We have a team of two!" Lean says. "We still hand-pour everything here in New Zealand."

That independence gives her control over where the brand appears. "It's really important what you put your brand next to."

This discipline has powered The Virtue's recent arrival in London. "Seeing your name next to Guerlain and Tom Ford is amazing. Sometimes I think—I don't know how we got here," she says. "It blows my mind."

The Value of Human Presence

For a founder who once preferred the invisibility provided by being behind the camera, Lean is discovering the power and necessity of human connection. "I'm the person to speak to, to breathe life into the brand," she says. "Now is the time where I have to pony up and step into this world."

In the luxury space—especially one as personal as fragrance—the founder is part of the product. It is identity as value; authorship as authenticity.

A Fragrance for Those Who Love the Ocean

The Virtue has recently partnered with SeaKeepers, bringing the brand into the world of superyachts—discreetly, and with intention. "Ideally I would love to have SeaKeeper on every charter, on every yacht that's leaving port," Lean says. "The boats purchasing it and gifting it to the charter clients."

It's a natural fit: an ocean-based scent that participates in ocean protection.

Lean sees room for growth—carefully managed. "I don't want to create a monster just yet," she says. "Keeping growth manageable."

Her approach remains consistent: expand only when the experience can stay personal.

The Virtue isn't chasing scale. It's building presence—one human conversation, one hand-poured bottle, one emotional moment at a time.

The Virtue's Seakeeper is a fresh, woody, and salty unisex fragrance featuring prominent notes of Sea Salt, Jasmine, Saffron, White Oak, and Cedar, creating an oceanic, earthy, and slightly floral scent with an unexpected twist, launched in collaboration with The International SeaKeepers Society to support ocean conservation.

It aims to capture the essence of the sea, offering a clean, mineral, and sophisticated aroma that's both modern and enduring.

Concept:

More than just perfume, Seakeeper is a "perfume with purpose," with proceeds supporting ocean research and preservation efforts.

The scent is described as "Made for those the ocean knows," embodying the feeling of salty skin, sunlight, and the wild ocean

Top Note: Sea Salt (mineral, sharp, saline)

Middle Notes: Jasmine, Saffron (floral, bitter, golden)
