Germany finest shipyard and builder of the world longest superyacht, the 180-metre Azzam. Family-owned since 1875, Lürssen has delivered over 13,000 vessels from its yards in Bremen, combining 150 years of engineering excellence with uncompromising quality.
Lürssen is one of the oldest and most respected shipyards in the world. Founded in 1875 by Friedrich Lürssen in the Vegesack district of Bremen, Germany, the yard began with small wooden boats before pioneering the development of motorboats at the turn of the century. In 1886, Lürssen launched Rems, the world’s first motorboat — a moment that changed maritime history forever.
Today, Lürssen remains family-owned, now in its fifth generation under Peter Lürssen. This continuity of ownership is rare in the modern shipbuilding industry and provides the stability and long-term thinking that define the yard’s approach to every project.
Lürssen’s portfolio includes some of the most significant superyachts ever built. Azzam, delivered in 2013 at 180 metres, holds the title of the world’s longest motor yacht. Designed by Nauta Yachts with engineering by Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi, Azzam can reach speeds exceeding 30 knots despite her colossal size — a feat of engineering that required a combined propulsion system delivering over 94,000 horsepower.
Dilbar, at 156 metres, was the largest yacht by gross tonnage when she was delivered in 2016. Designed by Espen Øino, Dilbar features the largest swimming pool ever installed on a yacht — a 180-cubic-metre volume on the main deck. The project required extraordinary structural engineering to accommodate the pool’s weight and the dynamic forces of water movement at sea.
Flying Fox, at 136 metres, has become one of the most in-demand charter yachts in the world. Delivered in 2019 with exterior design by Espen Øino and interiors by Mark Berryman, she features a two-deck spa, a full-size basketball court, and an extraordinary sense of volume that belies her already vast dimensions.
Lürssen’s engineering capabilities are unmatched in the private yacht sector. The yard’s military heritage — having built warships, minesweepers, and patrol vessels for the German Navy — brings a rigour and precision to superyacht construction that few civilian yards can replicate. Steel cutting, hull construction, and mechanical engineering are all performed in-house across Lürssen’s multiple facilities in Bremen and Rendsburg.
The yard’s Nord, at 142 metres, and Opus, at 107 metres, demonstrate Lürssen’s range — from the very largest exploration yachts to more intimate vessels that still carry the unmistakable quality of a Lürssen build. Project Thunder and Project Lightning, both delivered in recent years, have pushed the yard further into ice-class and expedition-capable construction.
Lürssen operates from multiple sites across northern Germany. The main yard in Bremen-Vegesack handles design, engineering, and outfitting. The Rendsburg facility, acquired in 2012, provides additional covered building capacity for the largest projects. Together, the yards can accommodate simultaneous construction of multiple yachts exceeding 100 metres — a capability matched by only a handful of shipyards worldwide.
In 2025, Lürssen celebrated its 150th anniversary — a milestone that few industrial enterprises of any kind can claim. The celebration was marked by a series of events across Europe, reflecting the yard’s deep connections to the yachting community it has helped to build.
Looking forward, Lürssen continues to invest in sustainable technologies, including methanol propulsion and fuel-cell systems. With over 3,500 employees and an order book that stretches years into the future, Lürssen’s position as the world’s leading superyacht builder remains unchallenged.
